Adoptions
The story of Butters the koala
Friends of the Koala found me in May 2020 when I was about 9 months old. I was found next to a busy road, desperately trying to climb a large tree after my mother abandoned me. As I was only a joey and needed round the clock care, I went home with a volunteer koala carer. After a couple of months with my human mum, I began spending my days in koala kindy, playing with other joeys and learning necessary koala skills.
Once I was a bit bigger, I moved into what’s called a plantation kindy. It’s still a fenced area, but I could practice my climbing skills, eat leaves from a real tree and experience all types of weather for the first time! Vet staff kept checking on me over a couple of weeks and were thrilled with my progress.
So after a final assessment, I was released back into the wild.

The story of Zenani
In late spring 2013 weather conditions in NSW were so hot, dry and windy — catastrophic bushfires broke out all up and down the east coast. One massive fire just north of Newcastle was sadly a hot spot for wildlife.
Wildlife search and rescue teams working on the Williamtown Airforce Base fires came across a tiny female joey koala who had suffered severe burns and was still alive.
The rescuers called her Zenani. Zenani went to a local veterinarian for her initial treatment and later transferred into a private home for 24-hour nursing.
Zenani was very ill for several weeks and had to undergo painful burns treatments daily. She slowly began to respond to care but was not progressing as well as expected. Zenani transferred up to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital three weeks after her initial rescue for more intensive treatment. She is now a permanent resident at the Koala Hospital.

The story of Balmoral Mini
A call made to our 24 hour rescue line reporting that a dog has attacked a mother koala and her joey in the backyard of a house in Port Macquarie. Our rescuers picked up the two koalas, although the mother died from her extensive injuries.
Balmoral Mini weighed only 500 grams and appeared to be unharmed. One of our experienced volunteers took Mini in for home care, where she remained for five months. Once Mini was two and a half kilograms, she moved into the Joey Yard at the Koala Hospital. She shared this yard with other joeys for a few more months, in a process we call “dehumanising”. Here they have minimal contact with our volunteers and learn to become wild koalas.
Balmoral Mini was released along with Myoora Jarrah and other joeys on 28 August 2018 into a release program developing a population in a new area.

Friend of the Koala
Friends of the Koala is committed to conserving koalas and preserving and enhancing their habitat, particularly in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. In doing this, we aim to make a pivotal contribution to Australia’s biodiversity.
FOK is licensed to rescue and rehabilitate diseased and injured koalas across five of the local government areas in the Northern Rivers Region of NSW, covering a 10,000+ sq km area.
Koala Hospital
Koala Conservation Australia is a not-for-profit charity funded through donations, bequests, the Adopt a Wild Koala Program and souvenir shop sales.
Adopting helps rescue and treat sick and injured koalas and release them back to their home range where possible. An adoption also assists with the conservation and expansion of habitat, collection of information for research, and providing educational material to increase public awareness of all aspects of the koala.
The cost of adoption:
- Adoption package within Australia $60 per year
- Overseas package including postage $70 per year
- eAdoptions $40 per year
Koala DeFi Charity fund
The next version of Koala DeFi is coming and will introduce the Charity fund ❤️
This means that part of deposit fees from farms and pools are automatically sent to a Koala DeFi charity address. This address will be used only to fund Charity associations that save koalas and their environment.
At launch, 10% of deposit fees will be sent to this address. Koala DeFi will give transparency, details and usage on all transactions of this address.
